In this truly impactful CSR activity, participants work together with a local beneficiary to build and plant a working farm. This event takes place on site at the beneficiary. Using upcycled construction materials and with the help of agriculture experts, students and participants both learn how to properly grow and maintain a living farm, and work together to set it up and do the initial seeding. This is a great chance to provide a rewarding and educational experience to local children which will have a lasting, tangible effect in their future.
Your team will be tasked to use tires, trellises, pots and troughs to assemble planting beds for easy to grow vegetables and fruit. Assembly and design are up to you but it must be functional so design strategies are very important. Building a farm will benefit local charities, local schools, orphanages or other types of communities. There are a number of charities and projects to choose from and Making Teams can select the charity together with the client. The individual projects can be selected based on the charity’s needs of that moment. As they work to complete the project, the teams will get the chance to make a real difference in a local community and the lives of the people in it.
Instructions for the activity are given by the lead event instructor during the briefing to the teams, local gardeners will also come in to provide further instructions on the techniques of gardening.
The CSR Build a Farm involves different stages and various tasks to divide amongst the teams. The main ones include designing the farm’s layout, preparing the ground and materials, constructing a roof and watering system if required, distributing seeds and plants and finally planting and watering.
Objectives
• To build a farm that can feasibly produce a simple variety of vegetables

The Build a Farm activity takes place on the premises of the beneficiary school or community, depending on where there’s a need for at the moment so the location may vary.
Although CSR is not usually competitive, team challenges can be engineered into the days’ proceedings depending on clients wishes. For example, which team can plant seeds the fastest? Awards can be given based on creativity with design and decoration in the farm as well.
Insurance and instructor supervision are important safety factors with any event, and in the event of an emergency, transport and medical backup will be standing by.
The event briefing takes place at the activity location or the client’s hotel meeting room or lobby. In the briefing the group is separated into teams and introduced to the facilitators, then the lead facilitator gives an introduction of the event including instructions and objectives for the activity.
In the de-brief the lead facilitator goes through the event challenges and asks each team questions to assess their own performance before announcing and awarding the winning team if applicable.
There’s also time for providing further donations to the beneficiary and a group photo with the people of the beneficiary.
Briefing and de-brief usually take around 15 minutes each but can be extended upon request for more in-depth analysis of team performance.
The half day program takes up to 4 hours and the full day program up to 8 hours including a pick up and drop off at the client’s hotel or meeting point.
