Teams compete in an all-out shopping spree at a local market! With only a limited budget and a cryptic list of items to find and challenges to complete, teams will have to use their negotiation skills, creativity and intuition in a race against the clock to see if they can become the master of the market!
- To improve communication within the team
- To practice planning and organisation
- To consider leadership skills
- To focus on team synergy and individual roles
- To get to know each other and have a fun and enjoyable time
- To use negotiation skills
- To manage your budget and time affectively and complete the activity as a team.
Participants are divided into teams and given a set budget and a list of challenges to complete at a local market. Teams may complete each challenge as and when they choose, but must be finished within the set time of the activity. The team that has negotiated the best with their budget and completed the most challenges will be declared the winner.
Market Barter usually includes a scavenger hunt for products and sometimes a photo hunt and action-based challenges. For the scavenger hunt, items will be written in the local language and participants must decipher the meaning of each item with the help of the local merchants. Once they find the products they must negotiate with the merchants to get them as cheap as possible.
For the photo hunt, participants must find and photograph certain curiosities within the market and bring the photos back as evidence.
For the action-based challenges, teams must complete tasks offered at the market such as dressing up for a group photo, getting your team name on a wallet or select one person to be drawn by a caricaturist.
Thai Markets are found anywhere and everywhere, large and small, by the beach and inside the mall, along the river and down by the canals and in the heart of lively city streets, busy by day, and bright with lights at night, with the walking street night markets create their own special atmosphere so there’s always a market to be explored wherever you are!
The location for the event is at one or more markets of different themes such as local fresh, souvenir, clothes or floating market at a reasonable distance of the client’s hotel or own office.
Scoring is based on the total points from timing, remaining budget and completion of challenges. The team with the most overall points will be declared the winner.
Insurance and instructor supervision at all times is an important safety factor, and in the event of an emergency of team member withdrawal, transport and medical backup will be standing by.
The event briefing and debrief takes place at the activity location. The group is separated into teams and introduced to their facilitators, then the lead facilitator gives an introduction of the event including (safety) instructions and objectives for the activity.
During the debrief, the facilitator discusses the event challenges and asks each team questions to assess their performance before announcing the winning team (if applicable).
Briefing and debrief usually take around 15 minutes each but can be extended for more in-depth analysis of team performance.
Starting with a half day 4 hour program, Market Barter can be customized to a full day, 8 hour shopping extravaganza! coming local stalls and markets with glitzy shopping malls with a full variety of shopping based challenges.
- Lunch or dinner in a local restaurant
- T-shirts with your logo
- Banners / Flags / Caps

Depending on your market locations the transportation used will vary however Making Teams always includes transport to and from the venue normally by minibus.
Some markets such as floating markets will require you to take to the water and travel by long-tail boat to reach the floating boat stalls and others may simply mean a walk through the streets full of people all experiencing the vibe of life of the Thai Market atmosphere.
